CARNA – Hooray! A Sunday Roast Brunch!

Reincarnation Brunch

After being in Dubai for the last 10 years I love the ever-growing food scene, in particular a good Sunday roast. Every Brit will argue that their mum makes the best roast, I however know for a fact that my mother makes the best Sunday roast! Second to that is mine, and I’ve learned all her little tips over the years and always enjoyed sitting around the table, especially on a gloomy winter’s day. The oven warming the whole kitchen and living room. The fear of leaving the kitchen as the rest of the house would be freezing! I would love pouring copious amounts of hot gravy steaming around the abundance of glorious vegetables, nestling into all the gaps like sand. When you take the first bite into a perfectly crisp roast potato, that is a soft fluffy cloud on the inside.

So what is special about Carna? Carna by Dario Cecchini, a contemporary steakhouse concept helmed by the legendary Butcher, Dario Cecchini from the village of Panzano in the Chianti region of Tuscany, Italy. After taking over the family business from his father in 1976, Cecchini found his mission – to protect the art of butchery with the belief that all cuts of meat can be utilized when cooked properly, eliminating waste and promoting sustainability. An ancient art full of skill and ritual passed down from masters to apprentices, the butcher must be a knowledgeable and conscious carnivore who honours the life and death of the animal. We use this wealth of wisdom and artistry to imagine a secret society of butchers. Carna by Dario Cecchini honours this tradition and offers a glimpse into the society of butchers who provide the letters that form a poetic meal. Located on the 74th floor, Carna by Dario Cecchini features a dedicated bar, private dining rooms, wine cellars, an open kitchen, and striking chandeliers.

I tried the roast brunch Dubai Sundays 1-4 pm

It was brilliant! So much food! My favourites are usually @theninedubai or @rhodesw1 but for the overall package, this is a strong contender! The venue is lovely with massively high ceilings with an elegant ambiance. If you are lucky enough to get a table by the window you can enjoy breathtaking views of Dubai canal from the 74th floor.

One of the first things that caught my attention as we were entering the dining area was the live lobster behind the glass cabinet. I couldn’t help but think at least put the poor thing in water.

We were shown to the table by the hostess and then our lovely waiter Moazam took over listing all the drinks available. I started with the Kimberly which is named after legendary butcher Dario Cecchini’s wife. It was sophisticatedly served on a silver tray and came in two parts. Moazam first placed the glass and then poured into the liquid element. For the starters we were presented with smoked salmon, melon with Parma ham and a prawn cocktail. All simple but well-executed with good ingredients and served with delicious brown bread.

The roast came out in a massive tray served alongside Brussels sprouts made with a balsamic reduction, honey, and flaked almonds. I was delighted to be served mashed potatoes; however, the other potatoes were a little underwhelming. There is an individual gravy for the beef and turkey; not that generous, so we asked for extra. Both tasted like outstanding stock. The veal belly and beef cheek pies are AMAZING! One of the best pies I’ve had. The turkey was moist, and the beef was good; I prefer a slightly thicker cut. The food was under seasoned, however, there was a nice pot of salt on the table. The Yorkshires were fantastic!

The desserts did not disappoint either. The food was plentiful, and we had two bags full to takeaway! I sautéed the vegetables this morning with a fried egg.

The view is stunning from the 74th floor of SLS Dubai Hotel & Residences

I highly recommend this brunch starting at 295. It was 395 for the drinks package and included cocktails. The Kimberley cocktail (named after Dario’s wife) was lovely with the starters. It was a sorbet with liquid poured on top with a nice citrus tang. I will definitely be going again. It was surprisingly not busy. There were only three other tables booked.

Good service and great food!
